I knew when I read this I was going to make it one of the books for the BOMContest, but I didn’t want to do it right when the book first came out. Why, you ask? 😉 Evil author ways. I didn’t want a single soul holding off buying it in hopes of winning it instead. Even just those who hit my blog. The more that sell right off the bat, the better for the author.
But don’t worry, if you’ve already bought it and read it, you can still win the contest. We’ll work out another prize instead.
Anyway, back when I first mentioned Grimspace by Ann Aguirre, I said I’d finally found a science fiction series that appealed to me as much as Stardoc. For those that don’t know, I’m almost slavishly devoted to the Stardoc series by SL Viehl/PBW/Lynn Viehl. So this is, for me, a seriously high compliment.
Considering that the book is told from first person and in present tense, it’s even more of a compliment. I very rarely get into books told from first person. Present tense is even harder for me to get into. So if you think first person….man…present tense, man!, don’t let that discourage you. Believe me, this book sucked me in so fast, I totally forgot that I don’t like first person or present tense.
The heroine is phenomenal. She’s scarred, she’s flawed, she’s believable. The hero? Every bit as scarred, flawed and believable.
I’m lousy at detailing just why I like a book, because I tend to ramble off topic. But I can say when I love a book, and this one? Loved it.
If you’re into science fiction and you haven’t read it, you need to give it a try. If you’ve never tried a science fiction because you think it’s all Spock and Captain Kirk, here’s a great book to start with. And once you read it and love it, then come back and tell me because I’ll get you hooked on the Stardoc books, too. 😉 You can’t just have one SF series addiction.
How to win? Just post a comment here about whether you’ve read it, about other science fiction or first person books, etc etc, etc…and I do like discussion. Just yeah, I’d love to read it! isn’t too interesting and it also doesn’t help me add to my mountainous TBR stack. I get some great recs from these discussions.
The contest lasts for about a month and I’ll draw a winner from among those who comment. FYI, I draw by the IP addy, your name only gets entered once. Rules for contests on my blog can be found here. Winner’s name will be posted here, so you do kind of need to check back on a regular basis.
Now…. who is first?
