City of Ghosts

FYI…I’m out of town, in Orlando at RWA yearly conference…questions and stuff will be addressed  (probably) will I’m back.

So today, I’m going to wax poetically about a fabulous book by a fabulous author, Stacia Kane.

Actually, no, I’m just going to tell you it’s awesome. But read the first two books first. , Unholy Ghosts and Unholy Magic.  City of Ghosts is out.  Go buy the first two, read them.  Then this one.  And I know it’s sounds fricking weird…I mean, the heroine is a drug addict, but…come on.  Trust me.  They are awesome

IT’S A THIN LINE BETWEEN ALIVE AND UNDEAD.

Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.

Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’s drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.

Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.

These books are now up on my special faves.  I’ve got a keep bookcase.  But then there are two shelves where I keep my diehard faves-my JD Robb, my SL Viehls/Lynn Viehls, my Ilona Andrews…and now my Stacia Kanes.  I actually bumped an author to my regular bookshelf to make room-that’s how awesome these books are.  I love them.

  1. You’re the second author I’ve seen rave about these books. Once my book buying budget has replenished I’ll be picking these up.

  2. I loved “Unholy Ghosts”, but the 2nd book had me despising Chess so much that I almost didn’t finish the book.

Please tell me that “City of Ghosts” has her being less selfish and immature.

  3. Diane V…well, you need to remember… this is going to be an ongoing series. If she doesn’t start out a very flawed, imperfect character, there’s not so much to write about, which means there’s not too many places for the series to go with her.

I can’t tell you any more than that without ruining too much.

However, I’ll be honest-I loved the second book. I like books where the characters are messed up.

If they are already perfect, there’s not much left for me to learn about, so there’s no reason to read them.

I didn’t see her as selfish, so much as not really knowing how to cope, and not realizing somebody had feelings for her. She’s had a screwed up life-we all have, but she didn’t realize T. had those feelings for her until it was kind of too late. That’s what made her so real to me, and why I’m so addicted to these books.

  4. Shiloh – I am currently obsessed with your books & have just finished The Missing & Fragile, I’m about to start on Broken 🙂

Stacia is wonderful, I was initially put off by the drug use but 100% agree with what you have written & couldn’t put the books down – City of Ghosts was Amazing!

  5. Thanks, Sharon… hope you enjoy Broken. I know I was leery when I first read the back, but one page was about all it took to have me hooked on Stacia’s stuff. :o)
